Call of duty

I would like nothing better then to complain about the people I work with right now. But since anyone can read these I am not going to take a chance of that happening. I will have to save those outbursts for Twitter and for my dear husband to have to listen to at the end of the day.

So I guess instead I will tell you about my class at the Sheriff's department. No not for road rage, Alcoholics Anonymous, or any other such class that you would expect. This is the Kent County Citizens Police Academy. Last week was the first class but so far it has been impressive and very informational. I have my second class tonight. We will be covering the Road Patrol and Marine Unit.

Last week they gave us an overview of the class and the Sheriff came in and gave us a history of the Sheriff's Department. There were some shocking statistics.

Did you know that of the 80 some million dollars that the 600,000 residents of Kent County pay in property taxes, 20 million dollars go the the Sheriff's Department! The Sheriff's position is an elected position but anyone can run for Sheriff. Yes, even a convicted felon. Scary! Sheriff Stelma told us that in one of the 3 terms that he has run there was actually a convicted felon on the ballot. Just shows that you have to know who you are voting for.

I'm really looking forward to my ride along in October. I picked a day shift and will either go to the East Precinct (Ada/Cascade area) or Central Precinct (which could go anywhere).

At least it will be a fun ending to a very non fun day at work.
